San Francesco della Vigna
Redefining spaces for a functional, modern day environment
The building, built between 1953 and 1956 and home to the former Curia of the Convent of San Francesco della Vigna, is situated in the beautifully characteristic northern “sestiere” (district) of Castello 2786, which overlooks the Venetian lagoon. The Opera Pia di Terra Santa commissioned the restoration and extraordinary maintenace in 2006 to Architect Marino Alessandri, Studio Sinergo Engineering and Dottor Group. The goal of the intervention was to convert the building, into the new library that will house the volumes the Convent already possesses, as well as the book collection owned by the former Convent of San Michele in Isola. The design provides for the complete redefinition of the distribution of the internal horizontal and vertical spaces, in addition to the static reinforcement of the foundations and flooring, with the creation of large book depositories, reading rooms and classrooms.
