Basilica di San Giorgio
Technology and Scientific research: an integral part of restoration
Every restoration is different because every work of art has a unique history, distinct characteristics, and a diverse environment. The Basilica of San Giorgio, first built in the IX century, then re-designed by Palladio in 1560 as we see it today, is one of Venice’s most beloved monuments. Restoration began in 2000. Given the complexity and the public’s general interest, Dottor installed a webcam, allowing experts, residents and tourists alike to observe and comment the restoration live.
The intervention began with a preliminary study, which included an historical analysis supported by detailed laboratory analyses tailored to identify, amongst other things, the chemical and mineralogical characteristics of the materials, implementation techniques and the state of conservation of the buildings. The data were confronted with the historical analysis in order to determine the best procedures and the type of intervention.
