Palazzo Poste
An accentuation of the static structure
The building, situated in picturesque Cortina d’Ampezzo, appears to reach for the sky as if it were one of the many breathtaking peaks enveloping the city. Time and harsh weather conditions had taken their toll on this important public building, and so in March of 2010, the municipality, commissioned Eng. Gianluca Vigne and Dottor Group to begin a conservative restoration.
“The aim was to clearly highlight the static structure with its pillars, ribbing, frameworks and trusses, but, at the same time, it was felt necessary to place considerable importance on the exposed stonework and not to neglect the old and still attractive timber cladding” (extract from “Project technical report” by E. Gellner).
The project included the restoration and conservation of the facades, starting from the exposed concrete surfaces, plasterwork and stone cladding. Equally important was the repair and reintegration of the wooden panels, an important element of the building, especially on the northwest facade. Structural interventions included the removal of the galvanised steel roof, replacement of the roof structure similar to the original, but with new insulation and reparation of the water drainage system.
